I’m back! The last two weeks felt like a whirlwind. I feel like we got hit by the plague at our house. First Max had the flu, then it was my turn…Oh! Back to Max…and then when we thought we were in the clear- psych!- not a chance. Chels got it last week. Thankfully we were all feeling fine just in time for a fantastic Easter weekend with our family!

Have you ever thought about joining a support group or has anyone ever suggested it to you? Have you ever felt totally weird about joining that support group? I was asked to join an A.B.I. support group earlier this year by my C.D.A. (communication disorder assistant); Admittedly, I was not looking forward to the idea. What would everyone else be like? Could anybody really understand what I was going through? Would it be helpful, or just awkward?

My friend, Emily, from physio, was joining the same group so I thought I would give it a shot. At least I already knew one other person going.

Turns out, most of us were pretty nervous about joining the group and for almost all of the same reasons.

Hearing everyone else’s story has really helped to normalize what I am going through. We quickly started learning that we were struggling with a lot of the same things. Finally! Someone who really understood what I was going through.

Our amazing therapists and group facilitators, Tonya, Jenn, and Jaylene, bring a brain injury education component to the group each month and we talk about strategies to help with various things like, memory, social discourse planning, problem solving & relationships . I have learned so much about myself and my brain injury since joining the group. It has helped build much more confidence in myself and has given me a lot of hope for the future.

I am so thankful that I decided to give it a try. I look forward to it every month! We have grown really tight as a group over the past several months and have developed great friendships.

Where there are friends, there must be food!

I took these fiery treats to group one time and they did not disappoint. In fact, everywhere I take these they are an instant hit! I mean, really, how can you go wrong with bacon and cheese? Throw a little green torpedo into the mix and you have Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers!

Please do yourself, and your friends a flavour and give these a try! They are so easy to make and cost so little! Did I mention that they’re fat free? No? Ok, they’re not, but they’re really tiny.

If you find yourself going through something tough, whether you have a brain injury or not, please don’t go through it by yourself. You are not alone! Let’s share our stories and break the silence.

Talk to somebody, maybe think about joining a support group & take some Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers!
